A dear friend of mine and I were having a conversation the other day about what it would be like living in the times of self sufficiency. No markets, no media, only the bare necessities of life. I thought to myself how much happier those people must have been. And, no, these photos are not particularly happy, but I think back then joy came from something more than just a smile on your face. Hard work and perseverance, taking something from start to finish in its most raw form. Sure, the way of living in those times carried its own sets of toils, but in a way, simpler ones. These photos show more than just faded black and whites, they portray a lost art of the homestead.
